Farming Status and Plans

Description of farming status, plans, and practices:

I would like to begin, or join others in, a farm operation that focuses on organic food production,  sustainability and good land management. I am ready to return to my roots on a diversified farm where I can raise my children to understand the lifestyle and the importance of sustainable food production. My initial goal would to start with garden vegetables and egg production (chicken duck and quail eggs). Starting with a farm stand and farmers markets, and connecting with local shops and resturants to determine their needs/wants as things progress. The Farm to Table movement is a great idea.  Eventually to do some permaculture with tree fruits and berries, and to expand into pasture raised meat production (poultry, rabbits, pork). I also want to have a public education and retreat aspect for the property to expand awareness of the importance of sustainability and the therapeutic aspects of farm life. I currently work in education and am both a teacher and a life science explorer by personality.

Description of marketing method:

Farm stand if on a well traveled road. Farmers markets and online marketing are another outlet.  Eventually turning to local restaurants/shops to contract with them for sustainably farmed eggs, vegetables, and other products.

Experience & education:

Formal agricultural education

Experience description:

I grew up on a small organic farm in the central Adirondack. As a child, we were involved on all aspects of the farm--from the vegetables (land prep, planting, weeding, pest control, harvest, winter storage, canning, freezing, etc. ) to the live stock (hand milking goats, caring for chickens and eggs, feeding pigs, as well as butchering and meat prep). Barn, shed and house upkeep were also part of farm life, as was haying and animal fodder. My father also co-owned a dairy farm in Washington County with his parents and brother, which we were involved with on a regular basis. I also worked in agricultural research at Cornell university in Ithaca, spending 3 years working with breeding better commercial processing tomatoes, then another 3 1/2 years working in corn research.
