Farming Status and Plans

Description of farming status, plans, and practices:

My wife and I are interested in raising livestock for sale as either breeding stock or feeders.  We would like to raise sheep/goats, pigs, chickens, and ducks.  We fully intend to raise our animals in a humane, natural way, mimicking nature.  We are very conscious of the land and the health of the animals, and would implement intensive pasture rotation, following the grazing of the livestock with that of the chickens/ducks, to break the life-cycle of pests.  Ideally, we would partner with a farm that is currently marketing products which our products could be a value-added benefit.  This is a lifelong dream of ours; we are lovers of all things natural and have a tremendous respect for nature, believing we should leave the land better than when we arrived.  We are god-fearing, honest, hard-working people who seek to partner with those who share the same life goals and reverance of nature.

Description of marketing method:

Direct to consumer, CSA, farmstand, restaurants.

Infrastructure required:

Onsite housing, Barns or other facilities for storage of equipment, livestock, and crops, Farm equipment, Water access, Fencing, Electrical Access

Description of buildings required:

Ideally, run-ins and pens already in place would be of great benefit, but we are willing to construct those as needed.  With regard to on-site housing, we currently have a camper we could live in, but would need to transition to more permanent housing.

Description of farm equipment required:

None required, but access to equipment would be beneficial.

Description of water access required:

Well, pond, or stream access is necessary for the animals and ourselves.

Description of fencing required:

Permanent, semi-permanent, or portable fencing would be needed to facilitate the rotational grazing of the livestock.  We could invest in this fencing, as needed.

Crops and Livestock

Primary Livestock:

Goats/Sheep, Pigs, Poultry, Other livestock

Description of livestock/crops:

As we are interested in rotational grazing, forage crops are ideally suited.  If equipment was available, we would consider planting feed crops for our livestock and for sale.  We have no desire to vaccinate any animals and will only consider natural remedies for maintaining the health of our animals.  We strive to produce the most natural and healthy product possible.

Farmland Tenure

Tenure options desired:

Farm Management, For Lease, Partnership, Other Tenure Agreement

Description of tenure options desired:

We are new to farming and would greatly appreciate mentoring of any kind.  We are not looking to becoming wealthy landowners, rather we choose to live simply and sustainably.  Of course, profit needs to be made to sustain our modest lifestyle, the farm itself, and the continued health and production of our livestock.

Additional Information

Experience description:

My wife and I have no formal education or experience with farming.  What we do have is a undying desire, a calling, to live in harmony with our natural surroundings.  We also possess good health, a strong work ethic, the ability to learn quickly, and I am very handy with carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and finding solutuions to most situations that arise.
