Farming Status and Plans
Description of farming status, plans, and practices:
I am a chestnut farmer with a 20 acre orchard in Johnsonville, NY. I am looking for more land (cleared-land only, and at least 10 acres) on which I can plant more hybrid chestnut trees. I currently have a revenue share agreement with a landowner on a 30-year lease. I am interested in using this model elsewhere, but I will consider other lease options. I will not consider lease agreements shorter than 25 years given the time-to-yield of chestnut trees. I am open to shared land-use strategies such as alley-cropping cut flowers or hay between rows of trees, or strip-grazed silvopasture in the alleys. Looking forward to working with you!
Note: Chestnut trees do not tolerate alkiline soils or wet feet. Sandy soils are preferable for chestnut planting.
