Farming Status and Plans

Description of farming status, plans, and practices:

My wife Tara and I are beginning farmers looking to start a small-scale operation using regenerative and susatinable practices. We would implement techniques and intensive rotational grazing patterns like those similar to Joel Salatin's. Our primary focus would be grass-fed, grass-finished goat/sheep, pork, and poultry (meat and eggs), and using these animals to restore/improve soil and pasture health in the process.

Description of marketing method:

This would start very small so we can further practice and advance our skills and knowledge of farming. Along the way we would use our connections with other farmers and farm entities/businesses as well as use social media to get our name out there and hopefully gain following/desire for our products. We would advertise our regenerative farming methods and local source for humanely raised meat, dairy, and eggs.

Description of buildings required:

Simple onsite housing only necessary if the property is far from our current living situation in Lagrangeville. Barn for storage of farm equiptment/machinery.

Description of farm equipment required:

Any sort of farm vehicle would be extremely helpful (kubota, gator, tractor, skidsteer, old pickup truck, etc). Any electric fencing equipment would also be a huge help. Electrical access for water heaters during the winter.

Description of water access required:

Well for animals' water.

Experience & education:

Experience description:

I was a farmer at Sprout Creek Farm from March 2018 - May 2019. During an interim between farm managers, I also acted as the Farm Manager for about 3 months. This was a dairy farm milking about 30 cows and 60 goats. There was also a pig operation with 6 pigs and a poultry operation with around 70 laying hens and 15 turkeys which we slaughtered before Thanksgiving. I was in charge of the chickens and also focused on overseeing the goat herd and milking. My wife also worked at Sprout Creek Farm from Oct 2018 - May 2019. She also worked on an apple orchard that grew other treefruits, berries, and various vegetables, as well as manning the farmer's market on the weekend. Combined we have experienced many aspects of farm work including kidding season for goats, rotational grazing, poultry processing, milking cows and goats, and using farm equipment.
