Farming Status and Plans

Years actively farming:

Description of farming status, plans, and practices:

I'm currently gardening on a smaller piece of land in Hamburg, NJ and am looking for farming opportunities in Orange County, NY, so I may expand my farm practice, which is inspired by biodynamic and permaculture principles. I have had hands-on farming experience primarily in Oregon, Montana, Arizona, New Jersey, and Virginia, but have farmed in many more states in my travels. I'm a fermentation educator by trade hoping to live closer to land and partner up with other individuals passionate about growing food, tending to bees, cultivating mushrooms, and creating rich compost to nourish the land. I plan to create value-added product (fermented foods and beverages) with my farmed foods.

Description of marketing method:

I have a large following through my work in fermentation education and plan to utilize all the marketing methods I've used in the past -- social media, sharp website, online store, and local collaboration & outreach -- to get the word out about my farming work. I'm more than ready to start marketing once I get settled and established in Orange County.

Farm Characteristics

Preferred location:

  • Hudson Valley
    • Orange

Desired acreage:

1-5, 6-10, 11-20

Infrastructure required:

Barns or other facilities for storage of equipment, livestock, and crops, Water access, Fencing

Description of infrastructure:

I live in a retrofitted bus and would like to park on the land connected to the farm, so I may live where I work. My home is solar-powered. My toilet is composting (I am very experienced with humanure and all forms of composting). I have a wood-burning stove and propane furnace for winter-time. I've also installed a cooling system for the summertime, but I like to stay in a shady space. Ideally, I could build a structure for the bus if I am planning to stay 3-5 years, which would be ideal for my next farming project.

Some kind of storage for tools and equipment is necessary. A greenhouse would be a huge bonus, but I'm willing to invest in one for the right space. Fencing, to keep wildlife out, is also important to me.

Description of buildings required:

A barn or shack -- something to keep farm tools and equipment from getting wet.

Description of water access required:

Water line for crop irrigation

Description of fencing required:

Fencing to keep wildlife out, ideally around most of the growing acreage.

Crops and Livestock

Primary crops:

Vegetables, Fruits, Other Crops

Description of livestock/crops:

Vegetables and fruits, mushroom cultivation, beekeeping, wildflowers, compost, fermented food production, biodynamic processes

Farmland Tenure

Tenure options desired:

Farm Management, For Lease, Partnership

Description of tenure options desired:

I'm flexible to a variety of tenure agreements. Partnership or farm management would be ideal, given the owner has similar philosophy, values, and vision about farming and land management. I'm also willing to lease the land.
