Farming Status and Plans
Years actively farming:10+
Description of farming status, plans, and practices:
I grew up in Rochester, NY. I am a software engineer with some capital on hand and would like to invest in land to start a regenerative farming cooperative. I have been learning about Permaculture and am seeking a partnership as I will be staying in my full time job (software) to pay off the loan on the land. I am also interested in rainwater capture, sustainable building, sustainable grazing, and sustainable forestry. My goal is not to make a profit -- it is to increase biodiversity and provide food for the community. I would also like to focus on closing all pollutive loops. At this point in time I am capable of taking on up to $100,000.00 loan for land and am open to negotiating on the terms of the stewardship.
Description of marketing method:
I have little experience in this area.
Does this farmer have a business plan?In progress
- Adirondack Region
- Finger Lakes
- Hudson Valley
- Saint Lawrence Seaway Region
- Saint Lawrence
Infrastructure required:Onsite housing, Farm equipment
Description of infrastructure:
At this point in time I am considering properties with no existing infrastructure. I am looking for properties that are proximal to water, on a gentle grade (for rainwater harvesting), and are a mixture of clear grassland and woodland. I hope to prototype sustainable building structures with future coop members.
Crops and Livestock
Primary crops:Vegetables, Fruits, Grains, Ornamentals, Hay, Other Crops
Primary Livestock:Goats/Sheep, Poultry
Description of livestock/crops:
The goal is to make a system with negative entropy. We will need to manage energy, water, flora, and wildlife populations in a way that sets up mutually beneficial relationships. I do not expect to make a profit in the near term from this venture.
Tenure options desired:Farm Management, For Lease, Partnership, Other Tenure Agreement
Description of tenure options desired:
I would like to make the land purchase and back the loan. I think to start the members would lease the property at a low rate with a path for full stake in the coop.
Will this farmer's operation qualify an eligible landowner for an Agricultural Assessment?Unsure
Experience & education:Other
I am a student of Permaculture and am worried about sustainable production amidst a changing climate.
