Farming Status and Plans

Years actively farming:

Less than 2

Description of farming status, plans, and practices:

I am primarily seeking established orchard and woodland. I am somewhat flexible about acreage, but prefer a higher ratio of forest to pasture or row crop area. Since I am interested in perennials and tree crops, I would prefer to purchase a farm outright. My methods will be holistic and permaculture-informed and low or no till. I am especially interested in coppice forestry and would like to try establishing a small malus americana grove for that purpose - in addition to growing trees and perennials for human consumption and growing abundant forage for beneficial, pollinator, and wildlife forage. I am interested in managing farmland for wildlife habitat and am able to work with any such conservation easements as may be present.

Experience & education:

On farm work experience, Other

Experience description:

My on-farm experience is from seasonal work on two businesses owned by members of my family: I checked fields during lambing and calving and removed any animals that had died; fed out large round bales of sileage to the cattle with the tractor in the early Spring; drove a Posi-Track or tractor with a brush mower attachment to clear brushy growth from pastures; used a Posi-track to level and reclaim a pasture that had been used as a municipal dump/used goods exchange; completed farm maintenance projects like staining the deer shed or adding compost to garden beds; moved individual animals as-needed; and cleaned out the goat barn. Additionally, I have expertise in tree pruning and perennial care from work as a residential urban maintenance gardener and propagation and annual cultivation as a community gardener.
