Primary reason for farming

Farm will generate a portion of my income

Farming status, plans, and practices

I currently work at a nature preserve where we do some vegetable and mushroom production. Would like to have my own land to do it, but start part-time so I can still recieve income from my primary employment. If the farming is successful I'd eventually like to transition to that full-time.

Farm Experience & Education

  • Farm internship/apprenticeship
  • On farm work experience

Have been working with the natural world for 6+ years. Started landscaping, then woodland gardening in Central Park, and currently stewarding the land on a 200 acre preserve in Garrison, NY. I also grow mushrooms (both indoors and outdoors) at my current position. Have also worked with the Westchester Land Trust (Plant propagation internship) and Sleepy Cat Farm (part-time help around the grounds, included working with vegetable garden and chickens). Formal education is a bachelor's degree of Science in Biology from Indiana University.

Farming Plans and Practices

  • Biodynamic
  • Organic (certified)
  • Regenerative/Sustainable

Primary crops

  • black outline of a carrot Vegetables
  • black outline other crops icon Other Crops

Primary livestock

  • Black outline of a sheep Goats/Sheep
  • Black outline of a chicken Poultry

Would ideally work up to chickens and goats/sheep but that's not at the top of the list for me.

Marketing Method

I have a weekly mushroom newsletter that goes out to 650+ and is growing. Would use that for marketing. Also increasing social media presence.

Farm business plan or farm resume

My business plan or farm resume is in progress

Farmland Needs

Infrastructure required

  • black outline tractor icon Equipment
  • Black outline of a water drop Water access

I currently have housing. Would like to do it on a scale where I don't need a tractor (I do have experience operating one, though) and can just use wheel barrows and elbow grease.

Desired Tenure

Tenure options desired

  • For Lease
  • For Sale

Looking to start farming part-time, on weekends and after work on weekdays, before transitioning to full-time.

Estimated price range for a lease or a purchase of a farm property

Up to $500,000

Will this operation qualify an eligible landowner for an Agricultural Assessment?
