Farming status, plans, and practices

The Briggs's are a family of four, we are beginners, looking for someone to give us the opportunity to live and start farming on their unused land. Which is where we would utilize Alternative and Regenerative, Permaculture methods and practices for both our produce and livestock farming. Too bring healthy, organic products to market. And we want to do it all...

We are not currently farming anywhere now. We know and understand the risks and hard work that goes into farming. However we are well versed in the regenerative, Permaculture methods and practices of Joel Salatin at Polyface Farms in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and Heifer International USA, Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas. We have been freely learning and studying on our own time for the past few years from so many other farmers and sources like these of Polyface Farms and the Heifer Ranch. Including, Jesse Frost of No-Till Growers in Kentucky. As well as Takota Coen of The Coen Farm in Alberta, Canada. We have put together an extensive farming plan and feel we can be successful anywhere given the opportunity.

We would likely start with indoor/outdoor sowing of the appropriate crops for whatever upcoming growing season when we get started. We would follow that by starting greenhouse/long tunnel grow houses for aquaponic/ hydroponic produce such as lettuces, broccoli, cauliflower, herbs, etc... Then we'll start building CSA and farmers market customer base while we begin producing micro-greens. Ideally we would benefit greatly from a large property with a sizable pond for some alternative food sources for our livestock, and hope that any interested farmland owner would be open to allowing us to make a pond if one doesn’t exist. Where we would start setting up infrastructure for managing our livestock.

We have a strong desire to get involved in whatever the land/landowner can provide, even maple tapping and honey. So land that is even 50% or more wooded than tillable would not hinder any of our farming plans, we can adapt, providing certain lee-ways are given.

We want to practice rotational "mob" grazing with all of our livestock in adequately shaded pasture or adequately thinned woodlands. Which we will primarily focus on three to four schooners of large poultry batches per season. We would also have a small brooder of 10-20 sows introducing a couple boars later. So we hope grow the sow heard lager every year until we reach 40-50 sows. Providing there is enough space to grow. We also want a small herd of 20-30 Hereford cattle as well as a couple Jersey cow/calf pairs for some dairy products. Lastly we want to start with a keep of about 100 Orpington egg laying hens, each producing us with roughly 150-200 eggs a year.

Farm Experience & Education

Self-tought, learning by reading and following over 2 dozen sources on video/ video courses. I know it sounds weak but I have obsessed over every aspect of farming. I know i can learn more and I am open to learning more and more as I go.

Marketing Method

Like we said above, we will market to farmers markets as we get started, local groceries and restaurants as we grow. But we will also establish a CSA customer base starting with friends and family who we know will share with others on social media and other public forums.

We hope to some day include vocational learning courses to the local school districts via direct hands-on learning or with video learning. Where we can teach Modern Age Agriculture and Farming, Hydroponics/Aquaponics, Alternative and Regenerative Practices. Bringing back Home Economics to the junior high schools, including lessons like Canning/Pickling and Charcuterie. Skilled Farm trades like farm equipment repair alongside auto mechanics. There is an abundance of lost knowledge in self-sufficiency that should be taught in schools that isn't, because of government mandated curriculum, to create cubical workers instead of self-sufficient growers and producers.
