Farming status, plans, and practices

I’m looking for unique property to start a small truffle tree orchard (the truffles grow in the roots of certain host trees that are inoculated with the truffle mychorizae) on between 5 and 12 acres. There is an amazing but relatively unknown native truffle that grows in the northeast that would be the primary Truffle cultivated (Tuber canaliculatum). One of the more well known truffle species (Tuber uncinatum - Burgundy Truffle) would also be cultivated. Many of the host trees would be Hazel to provide a potential second crop. The goal of the project would be three fold:

1) To help establish a high quality American truffle (Tuber canaliculatum).

2) To demonstrate a new long term crop for farmers in the Northeast US.

3) Profit.

Because it's a longer term project, I’m considering more novel ways to approach the land portion of the project (for example a combination of cash & equity in the truffle orchard in return for the land).

I can provide additional detail to anyone that's interested in having a more in depth conversation!

Farm Experience & Education

I'm a member of NATGA (North American Truffle Growers Association) and that opened the door to terrific resources. Given there are very few Truffle Orchards in the United States, and only one with Tuber canaliculatum, there are very few people with actual truffle cultivation experience in the northeast.

The resources we have developed includes access to support for inoculation, planting and maintenance for the inoculated trees. We already have a supplier that can provide the inoculated trees and we have two resources that can assist with planting.
