Farming status, plans, and practices

We are a small-farm family currently located in Eugene OR with over a decade of experience with sustainable agriculture and the organic food movement. We most recently owned and operated Birdcall Farm just outside of Eugene, on which we grew certified organic flowers for wholesale and retail sale and certified organic vegetable seed on contract; we were forced to close this business at the end of 2019 when our landlord decided to sell the property and have been seeking new ground ever since. Due to the difficulties with access to farmland for young farmers on the West Coast, we are looking to return to my home state of New York in pursuit of our farm dream.

Farm Experience & Education

  • Farm internship/apprenticeship
  • Farm owner
  • Farmer training or workshop
  • On farm work experience

Extensive crops experience on highly diversified fruit and vegetable operations, including high-value specialty crops, orchards, row crops, market/truck farming.

Livestock experience has been primarily homestead scale (some experience managing layer hen operations). Would focus on fruit/veg crops for business but open to and interested in incorporating livestock in whatever way makes sense for the property.

Farmland Needs

Infrastructure required

The only essential infrastructure is housing. We would need family housing, ideally 3-4 bedrooms, and due to having young children would require housing that is in good shape (ie no renovations needed). Preferred but inessential infrastructure would include hoophouses/greenhouses, animal housing, wash/pack areas, barns or other outbuildings for on-farm processing.

Desired Tenure

Tenure options desired

  • For Sale
  • Other Tenure Agreement

Lease-to-own, other situations which end in full farm ownership.
