Farming status, plans, and practices

I am a military veteran pursuing a USDA microloan and participating in a veteran farmer support/training program to help launch this operation. This will be a high-tech, indoor mushroom operation built inside an insulated shipping container, using integrated sensors and AI-managed climate controls to maintain precise temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels for optimal yields. The operation will cultivate a mix of high-value culinary and medicinal mushroom varieties, including lion's mane, reishi, cordyceps, and king trumpet (king oyster), chosen for their strong market demand and premium pricing.

The system is designed as a fully closed-loop operation. Water needs will be met through 100% rainwater harvesting, and spent mushroom substrate will be converted through an on-site vermicomposting process, resulting in zero waste output while producing valuable worm castings — usable as fertilizer on the farm, sold as a secondary product, or both. Depending on the site, the operation could also run 100% off-grid on solar power.

The container itself is designed to be modular and self-contained, targeting a production capacity of up to 200 lbs of fresh mushrooms per week. Products will be sold through two main lines: a fresh mushroom line marketed directly to consumers via a subscription model, as well as to local chefs and restaurants; and a value-added line featuring dried mushroom powder (ground to a fine, premium retail product), with tinctures planned as a future addition as the business develops.

Farm Experience & Education

  • Formal agricultural education

I am a U.S. Coast Guard veteran (honorable discharge) with in-depth technical training as an electronics technician. I bring over 30 years of experience in project and construction management, general operations management, and technical leadership across a range of industries.

I have extensive hands-on experience with renewable energy systems, including solar power, hydrogen fuel cells, and generators. As a licensed general contractor, I designed and built my own home to a highly energy-efficient, near-passive-house standard — experience directly relevant to designing and operating an energy-efficient, closed-loop, off-grid-capable container farm.

I am currently furthering my agricultural education through Cornell's Permaculture Design Certificate program, as well as specialized training in indoor mushroom cultivation through Cornell Small Farms. This combination of deep technical/mechanical expertise, decades of project and operations management, renewable energy experience, and hands-on sustainable building and design gives me a strong, unique foundation for launching and managing a highly technical, systems-driven controlled-environment mushroom operation.

Farming Plans and Practices

Farming method or practice

  • Regenerative/Sustainable

Primary crops

Crops: Culinary and medicinal mushrooms grown indoors in a controlled-environment, insulated shipping container. Primary varieties include lion's mane, reishi, cordyceps, and king trumpet (king oyster), selected for market demand and premium value. Production is targeted at up to 200 lbs of fresh mushrooms per week, sold fresh (direct-to-consumer subscription and to local restaurants/chefs) and processed into dried mushroom powder, with tinctures planned as a future product line.

Livestock: Worms (vermiculture) — maintained as part of an on-site vermicomposting system that processes spent mushroom substrate into worm castings. Castings will be used on-farm as fertilizer and/or sold as a secondary product, supporting a closed-loop, zero-waste production model.

Marketing Method

The marketing approach centers on a strong brand story: a small-scale, hyper-local, regenerative, closed-loop mushroom operation with full traceability to a single source. Rather than competing on volume, the operation will differentiate through transparency and sustainability — customers know exactly where their mushrooms come from, how they're grown, and how the entire system (from spawn to spent substrate to worm castings) closes the loop with minimal waste and minimal environmental footprint. This story — hyper-local, regenerative, single-source, closed-loop, and (where site conditions allow) off-grid solar-powered — will be the throughline across all marketing materials, packaging, and customer communication.

This narrative will be delivered through two primary sales channels. Fresh mushrooms will be marketed via a direct-to-consumer subscription model, giving customers recurring access to fresh, traceable, regeneratively grown culinary and medicinal varieties, alongside direct sales to local chefs and restaurants looking to feature specialty, single-source ingredients on their menus. A dried mushroom powder line will extend the brand into retail and wholesale channels — including coffee shops and health-focused retailers — for both culinary and functional/medicinal use, with tinctures planned as a future addition.

By consistently tying the product back to its regenerative, closed-loop, hyper-local story, the marketing strategy aims to build a loyal customer base willing to pay a premium for transparency, sustainability, and quality over commodity-scale production.

Farmland Needs

Infrastructure required

  • black outline electrical icon Electrical access
  • Black outline of a water drop Water access

Electrical and water availability is preferred; however, this operation has minimal, flexible infrastructure needs due to its modular, container-based design and is not dependent on existing utility infrastructure. Water needs can be met through rainwater harvesting, and electrical needs can be met through an off-grid solar power system, making the operation adaptable to a wide range of sites, including those without grid or municipal water access.

Because production takes place within a self-contained, modular mobile container system, the physical footprint required is very small — approximately 400 square feet to support production of up to 200 lbs of fresh mushrooms per week. This compact footprint means the operation can be sited flexibly on a small portion of available land, with minimal site preparation or permanent infrastructure investment required.

Desired Tenure

Tenure options desired

  • For Lease
  • For Sale
  • Business Partnership

I am flexible and open to a range of tenure arrangements, as my primary goal is to establish a productive mushroom operation using a modular, container-based growing system. A lease or purchase are both viable options depending on the property and terms. I am also open to a business partnership or cooperative model, particularly with landowners or organizations interested in regenerative, closed-loop, hyper-local food production.

In addition to mushroom production itself, part of my broader business plan includes designing and developing modular indoor grow room systems, so I'm open to discussing arrangements that could extend beyond a single site — including collaborative or partnership structures that support scaling this model. Ultimately, I'm looking for the right fit in terms of location, infrastructure, and long-term working relationship, rather than being locked into one specific tenure type.
