Farming status, plans, and practices

I am the founder of a not for profit that does community programming (primarily in Kingston, NY) that combines horsemanship, art & education. Our small operation customizes sessions for groups and individuals that we work with. Some of our programs take place "on site" at venues in the community and others (ideally) would take place where the horses live, in a farm setting.  I am also looking for a (separate) urban location to set up a temporary spot to host groups close to/within the city of Kingston (or other nearby city).

I am currently renting space at a small backyard farm in Kingston, which we have now outgrown, and was running an Urban Center on YMCA property in Kingston. The latter venue is no longer available for this season so I am looking for 2 spots.  Since lots of changes are potentially on the horizon for my organization, I am open to the possibilities that may be out there and look forward to a relationship with others that share a similar, or overlapping vision.

Farm Experience & Education

  • Farm internship/apprenticeship
  • Farm manager
  • On farm work experience

I have been involved with equine operations for most of my adult life, including having my own backyard farm in Vermont at one time.  I am experienced in all aspects though acknowledge the importance of adequate support and help to really be successful.  I have worked as the "manager" of another's property for commercial operations and also care of animals on my own (and for others) in a non commercial capacity.

Farming Plans and Practices

Farming method or practice

  • Organic (not certified)
  • Regenerative/Sustainable
  • Other

I am very interested in the care of the land for horses and for a farm willing to house horses.  Things like insect control, manure removal (or re-use), maintenance of grass paddocks and effective care of dirt paddocks / dry lots are all important to me and how I would operate on another's property.

Primary crops

Primary livestock

As previously stated, home for 6 horses that are currently part of our organization.  Am open to adequate shelter that may be in place and/or could be erected even on a temporary basis.  The same would be for fencing- whether that exists or could be set up.

I am interested in the planting of carrots (for the horses), citronella and lemon balm to use in natural fly sprays, and other similar "horse related" crops.  Also, plants for aesthetic appeal- sunflowers being a favorite- again, simple and not 100% necessary, but would love to have this option.

Marketing Method

I currently advertise events and programs through email list of interested and existing clients.

Only definite on infrastructure would be access to electricity and water.

As described above, I am open to building temporary structure(s) and fencing for an appropriate partnership.

Also, would be ideal to have access to large equipment, though not necessary.

Desired Tenure

Tenure options desired

  • For Lease
  • For Sale
  • Cooperative Model

I am currently open to possibilities that may exist and am not committed to one type of arrangement.

Will this operation qualify an eligible landowner for an Agricultural Assessment?
