Sky High Farm is a diversified farm in its 10th year of production, with 30 acres of grazing pasture, a small honey operation, and three acres of organic vegetable production. Our  livestock program includes cattle, sheep, laying hens, broiler chickens, turkeys and pigs.  We are committed to regenerative farming practices to help steward the land and mitigate climate change.  This includes carbon sequestering, soil improvement/conservation, watershed protection, and biodiversity enhancement.  Our methods for crop and livestock management complement each other in an intentional and holistic way.   

Sky High Farm is looking for a Farm Director with not only experience in cultivation but a passion for food justice and organizational development.  We are a unique organization in an exciting phase of growth and transition. Although we have already donated 70 tons of produce and meats over the years, this will be our first season operating as a 501C3 under the direction of an Executive Director and a board of directors. As we are refining our vision and mission, we are seeking someone to join us in building new systems for land stewardship, crop planning, harvesting, and distribution that will help us achieve our organizational goals.

Sky High Farm is committed to helping build equitable and healthy local communities from the Hudson Valley to New York City through education programs, agricultural internships, cultural collaborations, and community-led food access projects. We are committed to the organizational transformation necessary to achieve the regional economic and environmental change we seek. The visionary leadership, lived experience, and expertise of our incoming Farm Director will be central to this process. 

 

Summary of the Position

The Farm Director is a multifaceted role- internally and externally focused. As a member of the leadership team, the FD will participate in the development and implementation of overall policies, long-range planning, and daily operational goals and objectives.  The FD will be a key ambassador of Sky High Farm’s vision, mission and practices to the local community as well as to the broader world of food justice and regenerative agriculture. 

 

The Farm Director is responsible for the directing, planting, and maintenance of the farm and supervises all crop production, livestock management, and farm staff. In addition to developing the agricultural production plan for our farm, the FD will work collaboratively with the ED, partner farms, and community organizations to initiate and expand programs,  improve operations, train and educate staff, visitors, and volunteers. This will include operationalizing a new model for the Sky High’s food donations, involving aggregating crops for CSA-style distribution to households in several communities between the Hudson Valley and NYC and working closely with the recipients to evaluate and evolve the program. 

 

Primary Responsibilities

Working closely with the Executive Director to align with organizational mission and programmatic goals:

 

Production

Hires, trains, and supervises all farm staff, interns, and volunteers

Directs, strategizes, and implements all practices and steps for maximum sustainable farm production including irrigation, season extension, soil regeneration, and pasture renovation. 

Researches, plans, and executes a comprehensive crop plan for multi-tiered community engagement.

Operates and maintains all farm equipment and machinery and maintains an inventory. 

Directs and supervises farm staff in the greenhouse transplant production, planting, crop rotation, inter-cropping, harvest, and packing. 

Directs and supervises farm staff in pasture maintenance, livestock purchasing, processing, and housing, rotation calendar, and 

 

Finance

Analyze previous years budget

Create annual budget paired with annual and seasonal objectives

Performs financial reporting

Directs and oversees value added product production, establishing and measuring sales goals. 

 

Education

Researches, develops, and implements intensive agricultural training series for youth and adults from various backgrounds and skill-level. 

Works with leadership to develop, lead or supervise public and VIP tours as well as community partner experiences. 

Works with staff to develop new programs and fundraising projects to advance the organization's mission, create new opportunities for community impact, and open new avenues for funding. 

 

Qualifications

Experience as director or manager of a sustainable/regenerative garden or farm.

Substantial experience with management and supervision of staff, volunteer, and/or internships. 

Experience with CSA distribution

Experience working around issues of food insecurity and regional food systems. 

Demonstrated experience using an equity lens in food systems and working with multicultural and diverse populations.

A leadership style based in curiosity, active listening, collaboration, patience, persistence, clear communication, creative problem solving, and accountability 

Strong capabilities in culture building, team development, and individual coaching, with fully  developed abilities as a project manager, business operator, organizational leader, and team leader. 

Unwavering standards in delivering an excellent product accompanied by a positive team experience.

Proven ability to effectively and diplomatically engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholder groups such as funders and social service agencies and their constituents.

Proven to self-direct and balance multiple projects simultaneously and to easily shift between working independently and as part of a team.
